Kaskey Studios - APEX Piping Systems - Laran Bronze

Return to APEX archive photos

When APEX first got the contract to fabricate the armatures and ribbons everybody was concerned about the ribbon. The goal was to take a piece of 1/2" thick stainless steel plate and bend it so it looked like a piece of ribbon blowing in the wind.

Our first task was to make test pieces. Test pieces would give us a better idea of two things, the first, how best to make the ribbon, and the second, how much the ribbon would spring when the weight of the wreath was applied.

Pictures 1 - 3 show a plate roller we made. If you look closely you can see a test piece of plate in the roller.

Pictures 4 and 5 show the test ribbon and Ray Kaskey's plastic model of the ribbon.

This first piece was made from carbon steel plate as a proof of concept.

These two photos show the first stainless steel proof of concept piece. This piece was also used as the test load piece. That test was done to see how much the steel would deflect when weight was applied to it.
